Weiden, Germany

Weiden in der Oberpfalz is located 100 km east of Nuremberg and 35 km west of the Czech border. Weidens date of birth is widely regarded as the year 1241 although the first settlements in Weiden are dated back to the year 1000. Weiden became and important trading center with a population of 2,200 in 1531. In 1863 an economic boom came along, when it was connected to the railroad network. The population increased when some major companies of the glass and china industry settled in. Today the Superior Center Weiden is home to 43,000 people.
Weiden is a nice city with plenty to do. There is a lot of shopping and restaurants. The Markplatz is beautiful, especially during the holidays. When we visited during Christmas time they had turned the Rathaus (townhall) into a big advent calendar, it was really neat to see. Right behind the Markplatz is a cute little park where people take walks, walk their dogs, and ride their bikes.
Last year they had a cultural and shopping night. I think they do this every year. In the summertime they open all the stores until midnight for shopping with great sales. They also have plenty of food and beer and artists/bands in the Markplatz. Its a great time.
We live about 20 minutes from Weiden and enjoy going there often.
